Η Κοινότητα Βασσαρά, που βρίσκεται και* στον Πάρνωνα Λακωνίας, αποτελείται από τρία οικιστικά συγκροτήματα:

1. Βασσαράς: Κύριος τόπος μόνιμης κατοικίας σε Υψόμετρο 650 μ.
2. Βέρροια: Χωριό παλιότερο από το Βασσαρά, Θέρετρο τώρα των κατοίκων, σε Υψόμετρο 1.000 μ.
3. Ι.Μ. Αγίων Αναργύρων: Ζωντανό, Ιστορικο Μοναστήρι, Σημείο αναφοράς στην ευρύτερη περιοχή, Υψόμετρο 900 μ.

Μερικά χρήσιμα στατιστικά, γεωγραφικά και οικονομικά στοιχεία για το Βασσαρά:

Έκταση: 85.043 στρέμματα – μακράν η μεγαλύτερη κοινότητα του Δήμου Σπάρτης και ίσως η μεγαλύτερη στην Ελλάδα σε έκταση ανά κάτοικο

Πληθυσμός: 329 κάτοικοι – Απογραφή 2011 – το χειμώνα ίσως βρείς λγότερους, το καλοκαίρι όμως αβγαταίνουμε.

Ψηλότερη Κορυφή: Σταματήρα – 1.362 μ. Δεσπόζει στο χώρο, στοιχειώνει τις αναμνήσεις μας.

Ποτάμια:

Κελεφίνα (Οινούς) – ΒΔ σύνορο και κόκκινη γραμμή στην μάχη για την υπεράσπιση του χωριού – πατρίδας.

Γοργύλος– Ορμητικός χείμαρος στα ανατολικά, πλυντήριο και παραγωγός ενέργειας σε άλλες εποχές.

Διοίκηση: Η κοινότητα Βασσαρά, με την πρόσφατη καταστροφική διοικητική αλλαγή του Καλλικράτη, ανήκει, δυστυχώς, στο Δήμο Σπάρτης. Έχει ξεκινήσει εκστρατεία για την ανεξαρτητοποίησή της. Μείνετε συντονισμένοι για ενημέρωση!

Γλώσσα: Ελληνικά, ευρέως ομιλούμενη η Αγγλική

Νόμισμα: Ευρώ (προς το παρόν), Δολλάριο δεκτό σχεδόν παντού

Άλλες Δραστηριότητες των κατοίκων:

Οινοποσία: Αμπέλια παντού. Μέχρι και την κατοχή το κρασί ήταν η μεγαλύτερη παραγωγή του χωριού (και μας έμεινε κουσούρι). Ο μύθος μάλιστα λέει ότι ο Βασσαράς πήρε το ονομά του από τον Βακχο, τον θεό του κρασιού.

Χαρτοπαιξία: (Πρεφα – Πινάκλι – Πόκα) Μεγάλη παράδοση. Φοβερές Ιστορίες να ειπωθούν.

Σπουδές: Οι Βασσαρραίοι μαθαίνουν γράμματα – 1ο το χωριό στην Ελλάδα σε αποφοίτους ΑΕΙ.

Ξενητειά: Από το τελευταίο τέταρτο του 19ου αιώνα έχει ξεκινήσει αυτή η μηχανή στο Βασσαρά. Θα μας βρείς στη Χαβάη, στην Ινδονησία, στην Αυστραλία, στην Νιγηρία, στο Λουξεμβούργο, στον Καναδά, στο ………

Απόσταση από το Αεροδρόμιο Ελ. Βενιζέλος: 230 χλμ (τα 180 αυτοκινητόδρομος) η 2ώρες και 15 λεπτά.

Αδελφή Πόλη: Βοστώνη, ΗΠΑ. Πάνω από 1.000 Βασσαραίοι ζούν εκεί. Ο σύλλογος των Βασσαραίων της Βοστώνης ιδρύθηκε το 1901.

*Ο Βασσαράς, εκτός από τον Πάρνωνα, βρίσκεται, υπάρχει και ζει, κυρίως, μες τις ψυχές μας.

The community of Vassaras, which is (also)* located in the mountains of Parnon in Lakonia, is comprised of three residential areas:

1. Vassaras: 650 meters (2,132 feet) above sea level; the permanent residence of the local population
2. Verroia:1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level; a village (established before Vassaras), mainly used by residents of Vassara as a ‘summer’ village
3. Holy Monastery of Saints Anargyroi:900 meters (2,952 feet) above sea level; a vibrant, historical religious community which lately has become a point of reference in the greater area.

Some useful statistics and information about Vassara:

Land Area: 85,043 Square Kilometers or 21,014 acres – by far the largest district in the Municipality of Sparti and possibly the largest in Greece (in land area per capita)

Population: 329 residents (2011 census) – in winter perhaps you’ll find fewer people, in summer our numbers increase

Highest Point:Stamatira at 1,362 meters (4468 feet) it towers over the village and haunts our memories….

Rivers:

Kelefina (Oinous) – northwest borderline and ‘demarcation line’ in the battle to defend the village and country

Gorgilos– a raging stream to the east; in years past it was used to wash clothes and to produce energy

Administration:The community of Vassaras, due to the recent catastrophic change in governmental administrative management brought on by the new Kallikratis plan (put into effect January 2011), is now unfortunately part of the Municipality of Sparti. A campaign for our community’s independence from this plan has already begun. Stay tuned for updates!

Language: Greek, but English is widely spoken…

Currency: euro (for the time being), USD also widely accepted…

Local Products: Olive oil (exceptional quality) – the main source of income

                                 Livestock – goats

                                 Gardening – many summer gardens throughout the village

Other activities of the residents:

Wine-drinking:Vassaras was graced by many vineyards. Up until the time of the German Occupation, wine was Vassara’s largest local product (and it has remained our greatest fault)… According to local lore, the village got its name from Bacchus, the god of wine…

Card-playing:(esp. card games called préfa and pinákli and for sure poker). A great tradition in Vassara. Incredible stories of wins and losses abound…

Education:Descendants of Vassara (or Vassaraioi) love to learn – Vassara is #1 in Greece for producing the highest number of university graduates

Emigration:Since the last part of the 19th century, the emigration machine began in Vassara. You can now find us all over the world: in Hawaii, Boston, Chicago, Indonesia, Australia, Nigeria, Luxemburg, Canada…

Distance from El. Venizelos airport: 230 km (143 miles) (180km/112 miles are on the highway) approx. 2 hours and 15 minutes

Sister City: Boston, USA. Over 1,000 Vassaraioi live in Boston. The Vassara Society of Boston was established in 1901.
